Ironwood Builders’ Craig Modisher joins STREAM Collaborative Architects

Craig Modisher

Craig Modisher

STREAM is excited and fortunate to welcome Craig Modisher, the co-founder of Ironwood Builders, in the position of Senior Construction Coordinator. Craig is transitioning away from his former residential construction business to focus on providing energy efficiency and green building design consulting as the newest member of STREAM Collaborative's senior staff.

Between 2009 and 2018, Ironwood Builders provided services for the highest level of energy efficient residential construction and green building — from full construction services to consultation in Passive House design and residential energy efficiency. After a successful run as one of the region's premier builders, Craig will be closing Ironwood in January 2019. Craig will next use his hands-on practical experience building the best examples of green buildings in Tompkins County to help STREAM deliver on their commitment to design Zero Energy Ready buildings throughout the Fingerlakes region.

Craig will contribute early in the design process to help each project be the most efficient that it can be in turn helping clients reach their design goals while saving money and energy. In addition, Craig's intimate knowledge of current construction costs will allow STREAM  to provide more accurate cost estimates during design, to ensure that the process is staying on budget.

Craig started his career in residential construction in 2001, as a carpenter on a crew in the Pacific Northwest. Since then, he has worked on projects all over the US, in Mexico, and in Australia. These projects have ranged from strawbale houses to log cabins to contemporary Passive Houses. Craig and his wife Erica Frenay, with their children Rowan and Phoenix, also run Shelterbelt Farm in Brooktondale, producing grass-fed meats, eggs, fruit, honey, and ginger.

His passion is being involved with a project from sketches on a piece of paper to foundation and framing, and through finish trim work. Experience running a successful business, working in the field, coupled with clear communication and knowledge of building systems has given him the skills to become a key part of STREAM's design consulting team as well as a core member of the general business management team.
